Solak
Lukas Somers, under the moniker Solak, embarks on a profound exploration of the emotions that transcend language with his forthcoming album Atlas, due for release on November 15 via Capitane Records.
Following the release of his debut album, Green, four years ago, Lukas Somers embarked on a solitary journey of self-discovery. Moving away from compromise, he created introspective melodies that echo his deepest feelings, each instrument meticulously played by his own hands.
In the summer of 2021, amid the challenges posed by the pandemic, Lukas Somers, accompanied by mixer and engineer Steven Van Gelder and musicians Laurens Dierickx and Olivier Penu, ventured to Ocean Sound recording studios in Giske, Norway. Despite the obstacles that prevented two full members of the ensemble, Louis Evrard and Gerben Brys, from joining them, Lukas Somers went ahead and recorded all the bass and guitar parts himself. The majestic seascape of the studio was a source of inspiration for the creative process, which took place in perpetual daylight.
Over six intense days, the foundations were laid for a dozen songs, eight of which were eventually selected for Atlas. Subsequent recording sessions for backing vocals and string arrangements took place at Great Oak Studio and Luster. From October to June 2022, Somers and Van Gelder worked meticulously on editing, mixing and post-production, exploring various sonic avenues before arriving at the final iteration of the album.
The evolution from Green to Atlas is palpable, with darker hues imbuing the album with vulnerability and intensity, while lighter compositions soar with new grandeur. Solak has transformed into a cohesive unit, with each musician infusing his or her unique personality into the musical fabric. Yet amidst this sonic transformation, Lukas Somers remains committed to authenticity, eschewing commercial motivations in favor of honest expression.
“I don’t want to give too many explanations about the songs,” he asserts. “Listeners will translate the atmosphere contained in the music according to their own experiences”.
Drawing parallels with artists such as Feist, Jack Johnson and Elliott Smith, Solak’s music resonates with a sincerity that transcends genres. With Atlas, Lukas Somers aspires to offer solace amid life’s tumultuous currents, inviting listeners to find refuge in the quiet depths of his compositions.
“I hope that those who listen to my music come closer to themselves,” he declares. “That after a hectic day, the stress melts away and the feeling prevails that everything will be all right”.
Atlas is more than an album, it’s a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. By immersing themselves in its haunting melodies and introspective lyrics, listeners will reassure themselves that, indeed, all will be well.
